Makrygialos Town
Makrygialos town is full of lovely restaurants, tavernas, cafes, beaches, bars, shops and more! Enjoy exploring all the town has to offer!
You can also enjoy a traditional 'Greek night' up at the nearby town of Pefkos, found in the mountains above Makrygialos.
Water Sports
There are plenty of opportunities to take part in a variety of water sports from water skiing, paddle boarding, banana boating and more. Just walk down to the beach infront of the Grapevines complex, through the Sunwing hotel, and you’ll find them!
Nearby Beaches
There are a number of beaches for you to enjoy.
Makrygialos beach and Lagoufa beach are just below Grapevines.
Diaskari beach is at the far end of the town, and Kalamouhania beach is just past the harbour on the other side of town.
Caves
There are a number of caves you can visit with amazing stalactites and stalagmites, but the nearest to Makrigialos is Vreiko Cave 5kms north of Pefki. The cave is easily accessible by a narrow road followed by a walk of about 500 metres on a maintained path.
Walking
-There are three beautiful gorges in the area providing great walking and rewarding you with breathtaking vistas. Take a short walk up the protected valley gorge of Aspro Potamos inland from Makrigialos. Then there is The Butterfly gorge, a 4.5km walk from Koutsouras which takes in wonderful landscapes and small waterfalls along the route. Or try the Pefki gorge between the village of Pefki and Makrigialos, but don’t forget to visit the Folklore Museum of Pefki while you are there. Last but not least is the Pervolakia gorge a 3.5 km walk starting from the Kapsa monastery, and one of the most impressive gorges in the area, hosting a number of unusual plants and wildlife. The walk ends at the village of Pervolakia where you’ll find the wonderful taverna - He cooks whatever is growing in his garden - all freshly picked!
-If you prefer to have a guide then there are organised walks around the area from Pefki or Agios Stefanos.
-The highest peak in the area is Afendis Stavromenos at 1500 metres, 11 miles from Makrigialos and can only be reached by walking or in a 4x4. You can enjoy unforgettable and stunning views towards Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Ierapetra and the surrounding islands of Chrissi and Koufonisi, depending on the visibility but be warned that the peak is often covered in snow in winter. At the top of this windswept peak is the small chapel of Jesus Cross alongside a larger room built for the celebration of the church’s feast day on 14th September.
