Info

The village of Makrygialos (Makry – meaning long,  Gialos – shore) nestles in a bay on the south coast of Crete. Makrigialos itself is a lively, yet unspoilt, typical Greek village boasting some fine tavernas and shops. The village is surrounded by historical, cultural and natural wonders ideal for couples and families.

The walk from the villa at one end of the village, along the beach and promenade to the picturesque harbour at the other, passes a number of restaurants, waterside tavernas fronting the blue flag beach. You can eat at a different taverna each night and never be disappointed

Behind the village are the beautiful Cretan hills and mountains where you will find the most wonderful secluded villages each with its own taverna serving traditional fresh produced Cretan cuisine. All along the coast are fine beaches and secluded coves.

The Bay of Makry Gialos boasts the longest shallow sandy beach of East Crete. The white, sandy beach, rated one of the 10 best family beaches in Crete, gently slopes into the clear, clean shallow waters  - perfect for families. There are a number of places along the beach offering sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports, catering for all tastes.

Water sports including pedal boats, jet-skis, fishing boat charters and excursions to the nearby uninhabited island of Koufonisi are available during the summer.

Makrygialos is just 30 minutes drive from Ierapetra and the drive along the coastline is dotted with unspoilt villages and secluded bays, many with areas to stop and rest and just enjoy the scenery.

In June, the town hosts the prestigious Casa dei Mezzo music festival.
